Arabela Gandy
Born in New York, she began creating art at a young age and studied at Massachusetts College of Art and Design before pursuing alternative pathways in the Boston art scene. There, she began exhibiting and selling her work in unconventional venues, painting live at music events and collaborating with independent producers to create immersive art and music experiences.
In 2019, she was commissioned by the North Shore Community Development Coalition to create a public mural for the Punto Urban Art Museum in Salem, MA. She returned to New York in 2020, where she continues to grow her studio practice and professional portfolio. In addition to exhibiting her work and selling to private collectors, Arabela has licensed original artwork to clients including Outback Steakhouse and Stellar Snacks, and creates commissioned murals for commercial and public spaces.
Her work has been featured in multiple group exhibitions in both New York and Boston. As her practice evolves, she continues to expand her visual language, drawing inspiration from both the natural world and the emotional resonance of everyday life. She is a 2024 recipient of the Charlotte Mouquin Rising Star Award from the Arts Council of Rockland and was awarded the Artist Support Fund Grant in 2023. Arabela currently works out of her private studio in Nyack, where she continues to develop her practice and exhibit her work.

Catherine T. Horn
Catherine Horn, an Active Letters member, is the author of Taking a Ride on Butterfly Wings. A retired Educator/School Psychologist whose greatest passions in life are her family, children and writing. She believes that, for her, there is no better form of creative expression than writing; no greater joy than to find the right words, phrases, and sentences to integrate ideas, thoughts, and feelings that converge to create the stories of our lives.
Catherine has been writing for as long as she can remember, beginning with diaries and journal entries, lovesick poems with the kind of angst only teenagers can exude, and high school and college newspaper articles.
As an adult, Catherine has written numerous stories for children, countless Psychoeducational Evaluation Reports, articles and presentations for parents, and eulogies for far too many family members. Catherine’s poetry writing has continued and has evolved into more mature, current themes including the pandemic and social injustice. In recent years, Catherine has ventured into writing memoir which she finds fascinating and rewarding.

Carol Japha
Carol Japha is the author of two books, both tracing the journey of a young girl whose beloved mother falls ill and slips–gradually, and then completely — away. Psalms for a Child Who Has Lost Her Mother, a poetry chapbook, was published in 2015 by Finishing Line Press. Mapping Eden: A Novel, described as “loosely autobiographical but thoroughly imagined,” won First Novel, and was a Finalist for Fiction, in the 2022 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Carol’s poetry and fiction are born out of what she calls her personal quest “that continues to this day: To understand what I had, and what I lost. To discover the mother I lost so long ago, and myself — who I am, and how I am connected to my mother.”
Carol started writing in high school, as a reporter, columnist, and feature editor of the weekly New Trier News. Early in her career, she was an editor at several international research organizations: At the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, she helped produce a bimonthly journal in the field of international organization; at the Population Council, she managed the editorial process of a peer-reviewed journal on reproductive health.
Her career blossomed at the Charles H. Revson Foundation, where she served as program officer; wrote and produced annual reports; and edited essays and speeches of the president. As director of the Jewish Media Fund, she led the creation of a video collection that was installed at 200+ educational institutions nationwide. She managed a panel of leading scholars to produce an extensive media library and in-depth curricular materials on key topics in Jewish history and culture.
In recent years, in addition to writing, Carol has been painting, mainly interiors (her heroes are Bonnard, Vuillard, and Fairfield Porter).
